Humility. What is humility? In our modern times, it is an often forgotten and mis-
understood virtue. Yet, it is an important character trait and fruit of the Spirit that every
young maiden should seek to cultivate. Humility goes hand in hand with submission,
but in an interesting way it is a true sign of strength. The definition of humility is
“freedom from pride and arrogance; a modest estimate of one’s own worth; a sense of
one’s unworthiness before God”. This is indeed a virtue that is not often found today!
So, how do we practically practice humility in our daily lives? Here are some
suggestions I have found helpful in my own life.
First, generosity. This helps immensely in getting ride of pride. We can tend to hoard our
things and stuff and this can lead to pride as we look at everything “we own” and forget to
thank God. However, if we live with a free and open hand, God can use us and humility is
Recognizing God’s holiness and remembering our sinfulness is a very big practical and
spiritual step to living out humility. As we daily live our lives before God, do we realize
how awesome, loving and holy He is? And even though we do not have to sin, when we
do, He still takes us by the hand and leads out of our predicament.
Seeking God is another reason to live our lives with humility. We do not know everything
and we never will. Yet, God does and as we begin to see the depth of God’s power,
understanding and knowledge we will be full of humility and thankfulness that He has
decided to share it with us!
Lastly, asking forgiveness is one of the best ways to daily practice humility in our lives.
We all make mistakes and we all need forgiveness. It shows us how deeply seated our
pride can be when we need to ask forgiveness, but we do not want too! One of the best
ways to kill our pride is to simply ask forgiveness!
All these suggestions I have made to you may seem hard or difficult to start, but they
become easier as you begin to put them into practice in your daily life. The opposite of
humility is pride. And pride is something God hates. We have a wonderful example for
us though in our Savior Jesus Christ. He left HEAVEN to come and walk among us and
become the ransom for our sinful souls. Young maiden, can we not try to thank Him for
this in our practicing humility as He did?
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:29
